Hades Asks “Cast Your Vote for SIRENZ3 Cover”

10 Apr

Hades here. I am preparing a little surprise for my fair feathered females, Meg and Shar. They persist in this charade of having books published about our little adventures (in clear violation of our contract). Sigh.

Well, why not indulge the little chickadees? I have commissioned Illustration students from Maine College of Art to create 10 covers for the 2013 release of the third installment of the Sirenz series.  (The professor, Mary Anne Lloyd owed me a little favor…never mind the details.)

Forgive me, but I do like to toy with you humans and make you believe I (ahem) value your opinions about art and design.  So have a sweet perusal of the cover designs (yes, they will all have the title and author eventually) and vote on your favorite cover below.  I might even listen to you!

On My Nightstand

26 Mar

Image

It’s a bit crowded on my nightstand. Tons of books, as you can see. Most are for classes, some for fun.

The Works of William Shakespeare–I love Shakespeare. (Any romantic would!) Once you get into the language, it’s just sooo romantic. Sigh. (But he can be funny, too!)

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I’m sorry, but Miss Havisham is all shades of creepy, sitting around in her wedding dress for how many years? And at the table with the rotting wedding feast? Another reason I don’t like her was because her ‘life’ ended when she was left at the altar. Really? Granted that was in the old days, but some women didn’t measure their life by having a guy!

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Go Jane! Even though she was fettered by societal customs, and weighed down by cumbersome dresses, did that stop her? No! Betrayed by almost everyone, she moved on and made the best of her situation. I admire her, as should all women! (No whining!)

Law of Business Organizations. I have to read this for Business Law. It’s not that bad, the cases are interesting. But not fun.

Sophocles (Three Plays) Call me crazy, but I love Greek plays. Antigone, and Oedipus Rex. They’re not hard to understand and it’s a peek into ancient thought and life (not that I’d want to have lived back then!).

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. This novel was depressing and heartbreaking, yet it showed the resilience of  the human spirit. It amazes me what people can survive–if they want to.

Night, by Eli Wiesel. Humanity at its worst–the Holocaust. And its best–the will to survive, no matter what it takes.

The Illiad and The Odyssey by Homer. Although I liked the Odyssey, the Illiad is hard to get into. (Especially since our adventures with You Know Who.)

The rest are from mine and Meg’s biographers, Natalie and Charlotte. They know Alissa Grosso (Popular), Cyn Balog (Fairy Tale), Amy Holder (Lipstick Laws), Simone Elkeles (Leaving Paradise), and Cynthia Leitch Smith (Eternal). They want me to read so many others, but there just isn’t time. And there’s still more unread on my Kindle!

And the Winner/Loser Is….

28 Feb

Okay, I know that if you haven’t watched the Academy Awards, you at least checked out the fashions. My vote for the Best in Show:

I was surprised it was ‘dissed’ but I loved the high couture glamour of Stacy Keilbler’s Marchesa gown. (And the George Clooney on her arm was beautiful too!)

And the Worst is a tie:

This is an ice skater’s outfit gone full length. And the black bra showing through where it’s supposed to be cleavage? Tacky, cheap and so old-Madonna. Really, Sherri, love the color, but nothing else.

But then, this red monstrosity made me cringe:

It’s looks like Little House on the Prairie went to the Oscars, but add the crumb catcher cups on her chest. And it’s baggy! Oh Valentino, how could you? Livia Giuggiolo (Mrs. Colin Firth) should not have stepped out of the house that night!

At least  there are no dead swans wrung around anyone’s neck.  What gets your vote?

Take Me Away!

22 Feb

It’s almost Spring Break time! This is where I’d LOVE to go.  Notice the beach is empty–no wild parties, beer kegs, plastic Solo cups, parasailing vendors, CROWDS. I just want a quiet beach with fruity, tropical drinks, some shade to read a ton of books, and a beach of crystal clear aquamarine water.  Sigh… Where would you like to go on vacation? It would be fun to share it with Meg, but I don’t think she’s a beach girl. Wonder where she’d like to go?
